Early Cannes 2026 Palme d’Or Contenders Begin to Take Shape

As Cannes 2026 moves through its first competition titles, Fatherland, All of a Sudden, and Nagi Notes have emerged as early awards contenders, while several acquisition titles continue to attract buyer attention. The 2026 Cannes Film Festival has entered its early competition phase with several major titles already generating critical discussion, acquisition interest, and awards speculation. Although this year’s edition has so far been lighter on studio-backed films and American star power, the first days have introduced a varied slate of international contenders with potential global visibility. The competition is being judged by a jury led by Park Chan-wook, alongside figures including Diego Céspedes, Isaach de Bankolé, Paul Laverty, Demi Moore, Ruth Negga, Stellan Skarsgård, Laura Wandel, and Chloé Zhao. As always at Cannes, predicting the Palme d’Or remains uncertain, given the unpredictable nature of jury decisions. Among the early contenders, Pawel Pawlikowski’s Fatherland has emerged as one of the strongest titles. The Thomas Mann-inspired postwar road movie, distributed by MUBI and starring Sandra Hüller, has received glowing reviews and strong festival response. Its black-and-white visual style and restrained emotional force position it as a likely prize candidate. Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s All of a Sudden, backed by Neon, has also drawn warm reactions. The film, centered on an unexpected late-life friendship, stars Virginie Efira, who is already being discussed as a possible Best Actress contender. Koji Fukada’s Nagi Notes, currently an acquisitions title, has likewise earned positive attention and a sizable standing ovation. Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet’s A Woman’s Life, starring Léa Drucker as a surgeon involved in a midlife romance, has received a mixed-to-positive response, while Asghar Farhadi’s Parallel Tales has proven more divisive. Despite its prominent French cast, including Isabelle Huppert, Catherine Deneuve, Vincent Cassel, and Virginie Efira, the film reportedly received a muted reaction and is still seeking a buyer. Outside the main competition, Un Certain Regard titles such as Jane Schoenbrun’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma and Jordan Firstman’s Club Kid have generated significant buzz, with the latter also looking for distribution. With many major titles still to premiere, including new films from Marie Kreutzer, Hirokazu Kore-eda, James Gray, Andrey Zvyagintsev, Rodrigo Sorogoyen, Cristian Mungiu, Pedro Almodóvar, and others, the Palme d’Or race remains open. For now, Fatherland, All of a Sudden, and Nagi Notes appear to be among the strongest early contenders.
