Monty Dobson is an American Writer, Director and Producer known for his work in documentary film. A disabled veteran, Dobson transitioned into filmmaking after an academic career in history and archaeology, bringing a research-driven and narrative-rich approach to his productions. Dobson is the co-founder and executive producer of Stratigraphic Productions, a company dedicated to producing documentary films and series that blend science, history, and storytelling. He is best known as the showrunner and lead writer of the PBS television series America from the Ground Up (2014-2018), an award-winning program that examines American history through archaeological discovery. His film credits include the feature documentary Digadohi: Lands, Cherokee, and the Trail of Tears (2018/2020), which explores Cherokee history and cultural survival, and the documentary short Fighter: A Boxing Story (2021), profiling a disabled veteran working with at-risk youth. Dobson has also worked in multiple production roles, including writing, directing, producing, and editing. In 2022, he was selected as an inaugural mentee in the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ Catalyst Storyroad Institute screenwriting mentorship program. Dobson resides in Missouri with his wife, Jacqueline.
