• About George Blair

George Blair was a British-born director of Canadian extraction who was raised in Rochester, New York. (Sources give his birthplace as one of the several Newfields in the UK, but his 1940 U.S. draft card states Manchester, England as his birthplace.) A champion golfer, he moved into motion picture production in the 1930s in New York City, but by 1933 was working as an assistant director in Hollywood, through the help of his friend, director Hamilton MacFadden. Working extensively for Republic Pictures, he got his break as a director in 1944. All of his work was in low-budget pictures, mainly B-Westerns, until he moved into television in 1951. He directed episodes of The Gene Autry Show for his former Republic star, but is probably best known for twenty-seven episodes of Adventures of Superman between 1953 and 1958. He was married to Jean Bantel and was the father of two daughters, Jean and Susan. Widowed in 1950 after the death of his wife in an auto accident, Blair remarried, to Dorothea Nichols Davis in 1951, but was widowed again in 1954. He died in 1970 from cancer.
